It’ll be much easier on your hair, and it’ll also be easier on your skin tone too. If you go too dark, too rich, or too icy for that matter, you’ll need to change your makeup palette entirely. The colours you wore before won’t go with your new ‘do, and you may find that buying brand new cosmetic colors will start to cost a fortune. The top of the hair has been left very natural with this brunette look, and the ends have been colored using an ombre balayage effect.

Traditional Italian food in Rio Rancho New Mexico

joe's pasta house rio rancho

While dense and coarse, the meatballs are mostly meat, not some filler. They’d be terrific by themselves, but the green chile spinach sauce elevates them to rarefied status…and that sauce. Extreme care must be taken to ensure you don’t fill up on bread, great as it is. You also have to be doubly cautious so as not to fill up on Pasta House appetizers, some of which arrive in profuse portions which might constitute an entire meal elsewhere. There’s absolutely no way you can leave the Pasta House hungry! That something different might be the poppy seed shrimp, ten (yes, 10) jumbo shrimp sautéed with bell peppers, red onions and black olives in a tangy poppy seed sauce.

A taste of Italy in Rio Rancho

Joe’s version of seafood stew is a wonderful balance of fresh seafood with perfectly prepared pasta served in a large boat…er, bowl. The seafood–shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops, lump crab and Atlantic salmon–are so fresh you might forget you’re in a landlocked state and not dockside. The seafood is served atop a linguini pasta in a tomato basil bullion which allows all ingredients to sing. A sweeter sauce or one more acerbic would not have gone so well with the delicate, delicious, briny seafood, but the tomato basil brings out the seafood’s natural flavors.

It means grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, humanely raised veal and sustainably-caught fish. Pastas and sauces are prepared in stainless steel pots, healthier vessels by far than their aluminum counterparts. Only non-hydrogenated oil is used and it’s changed out every day, the remnants given to owners of vegetable oil-powered vehicles. Unfortunately Rio Rancho’s solid waste infrastructure is currently incapable of providing the recycling capabilities to fully comprehend all of Joe’s needs, but the restaurant recycles as much as possible. For my Kim, who has long had a crush on Joe and his “dreamy blue eyes,” stepping into Joe’s Pasta House for the first time since the change in ownership was traumatic. She’s used to getting a warm hug from Joe every time we visit.

Customers' Favorites

Much as they might wish for it to happen, no restaurateur can make their restaurant THE hometown favorite. It happens organically and it happens only by the unanimous will and consent of the people. Similarly, it takes the acclamation of the dining public for a restaurant to become THE heartbeat of a community–where residents go to interact with one another in a convivial spirit of sharing a great meal.

Joe is a proponent of not simmering his sauces for hours on end as opposed to the school of chefs who employ marathon-long simmering sessions (which tend to render tomatoes very acidic). That’s one of the reasons Joe’s red sauce is much lighter in color. That means hormone- and antibiotic-free meats and to the greatest extent possible GMO (genetically modified organism) free pasta imported from Italy.

What made our visit exceptional was the close attention that our server gave us. For once it was good not to hear "no rush" when it was time to settle the check and get on our way. Once a year, despite my protestations and whining, I agree to take my Kim to the Olive Garden. It’s a deal we have, albeit one that makes me feel like Faust in the Christopher Marlowe play. Faust, for the non-English majors among you, was a scholar who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. In my case, the deal is a visit to Olive Garden once a year in exchange for all the strange and exotic restaurants I want to visit the rest of the year.

See where it ranks among my favorite soups in New Mexico here. It’s the type of dish which makes all your synapses fire as your taste buds try to discern the adventure of flavors going on in your mouth. The sauce is rich with tomatoes, basil, garlic and other spices. This is an excellent appetizer, a wonderful way to start a meal. Until the Cabrona virus shut down the world,  stuffed eggplant was standard fare on the daily buffet. To offer his patrons more variety Joe removed the eggplant from his buffet and replaced it with another item.

On April Fool’s Day in 1957, a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) broadcast purported to show a family in Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family spaghetti tree. Spaghetti was relatively unknown back then in the United Kingdom so the BBC was deluged by viewers asking for advice on growing their own spaghetti tree. Decades later, CNN named this broadcast “the biggest hoax any reputable news establishment ever pulled.”  For my Kim, spaghetti is no joking matter. Her favorite Italian dish is spaghetti with meat sauce, especially the way it’s prepared at Joe’s. She’s a sauce minimalist whereas her husband can bathe in the stuff. She reminds me that the only reason I don’t ever order it is that I lack the dexterity to wrap the pasta around my fork.

He visits every table to make sure his customers are enjoying their dining experience. “Mi casa es su casa” seems to be his mantra–and he really means it. I once overheard him tell a guest who didn’t like the entree he ordered, “this is my house.

My choice is always “as much blue cheese as you can carry” and Joe’s delivers with creamy, rich dressing punctuated generously with chunks of real blue cheese. You can also order a wedge salad, Greek salad, Caesar salad and a Spinach salad. They’re all good, but along with the bread they’ll fill you up and you certainly don’t visit Joe’s to fill up on bread and salad. Joe’s Pasta House has none of those advantages, but somehow manages to serve a seafood bisque which transports me back to so many wonderful afternoons on the wharf at Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The highest ranked restaurant in this enumeration of exceptional eateries was Joe’s Pasta House. Among the 1,500 or so restaurants in the metropolitan area, none is as beloved by Yelpers as is Joe’s. With nearly 300 reviews (as of 26 May 2018), Joe’s has an average rating of 4.5 stars.

Colored Marble

"2022 will be the year of tone-on-tone cabinetry and hardware pairings," says Anastasia Casey, founder of IDCO Studio in Austin, Texas. For a recent project, she designed a kitchen with ebonized oak cabinets and matte black hardware to create a sleek, modern luck with a hint of rustic. After years of stacked floating shelves being popular for kitchen renovations, these are finally on their way out as people look for a sleeker, more refined look, adds Casey.

Architect Poonam Khanna’s design for a Hamptons kitchen features a custom island clad in brass that is designed to patina over time. Varying shades of green are all the rage right now (but that doesn't mean there's no longer room for white kitchens). Can't figure out if a butcher block countertop or vintage furniture is right for your design scheme? As we have been living more in our homes than ever, the need for multi-functional design has become extremely important, says Zinnecker. "The kitchen is the perfect [multi-use room] because people naturally gather here," she adds.

She adds that she's begun to see curved islands that are very interesting, as well as backsplashes with curved lines incorporated into the design. While a white kitchen will forever be classic, homeowners are getting bolder with their kitchen style. "We are seeing more pattern mixing and vivid color in kitchens than ever before," says Shayla Copas, an interior designer in Little Rock, Arkansas. To update your own kitchen, try a colorful backsplash or a bright island cabinet to contrast with surrounding cabinets, Copas suggests.

The days of moving into a historic home and ripping down walls to create an expansive kitchen are gone. Now, it's about embracing those spaces as they are. "Cottage kitchens are defined as those in an older home, and they often have a smaller footprint than modern kitchens," says Shawna Percival, owner and founder of Styleberry Creative Interiors in San Antonio, Texas. "Bringing new life to an older cottage kitchen is the epitome of green living," Percival says.

"Think citron and marigold for bringing saturated sunshine inside," he says. Try painting your island cabinetry yellow to boost energy in your kitchen or incorporate it more subtly by adding a vintage yellow runner to your table. Glass apothecary cabinetry has always been popular in the bathroom, but we are going to start seeing it creeping into kitchens. ” admits Gatts, who claims that the timeless incorporation of metal and glass is going to take over the open shelving trend.

Modernization

"While classic countertop options like Carrera and Calacatta marble are always beautiful, verde marble adds a luxurious richness to any color scheme," says Lavender. Pair it with light wood tones (skip the cherry wood; it will look dated) or with other shades of green cabinets and millwork for a tonal effect. It's always a thrill when interior designers reveal their take on trends that are worth embracing. If you've been thinking of upgrading your kitchen in some way, whether it's complete with a large island or a small, charming layout, you'll appreciate this list of top kitchen trends for 2022.

Here, interior designers from around the South share their predictions for what's trending in kitchen design for 2022 and beyond. This abundant shade is even making its way into countertops. Reaction on social media and traditional media dings MLB for the sameness of the menus. “You’d think a national organization like MLB would lean into the regional specialties of its ballparks, but nope,” SFGate wrote. “Russian forces remain unlikely to achieve a deeper operationally significant penetration in the area in the near term,” the Institute for the Study of War said in an assessment late Sunday. “NATO allies have not delivered what they promised,” Stoltenberg said at a news conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, referring to delays by the U.S. and Europe in sending weapons and ammunition. Russian troops “will likely make significant tactical gains in the coming weeks” while Kyiv awaits badly needed weaponry from the U.S., a Washington-based think tank said. Ukraine’s armed forces say Moscow launched a large-scale attack on energy infrastructure, with a barrage of 99 drones and missiles hitting the country. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed Sunday that its forces had destroyed ammunition depots and military equipment housed at three airports across Ukraine, including assault drones stored at Kamyanka Airfield in the country’s east. The ministry’s online update said the attacks took place over the last 24 hours. Vitaliy Kim, the governor of Ukraine’s southern Mykolaiv province, said that Russian drones “seriously damaged” a hotel in its namesake capital, sparking a fire that was later extinguished. Kim also reported that the strike damaged heat-generating infrastructure in the city. Whether ballpark and racetrack food remains appealing enough off site to support hundreds of locations remains to be seen.

Like most fast-food chains, the menu at every MLB ghost kitchen is identical, right down to sandwiches served on the same soft pretzel bun. The “starting lineup” offers chicken strip sandwiches, hot dogs, a sirloin tips sandwich and a cheesesteak. A combo plate is called “the triple play” and “the closer” is a ball bucket of doughnut holes tossed in cinnamon sugar. Ballpark Bites outlets have sprung up seemingly overnight, 44 in California alone, second only to the 76 in Texas. Even so, the Kremlin’s forces are closing in on the strategically important hilltop town of Chasiv Yar, whose capture would be an important step forward into the Donetsk region.

Three drones were intercepted near an oil depot in Lyudinovo, an industrial town about 143 miles north of the Ukrainian border, Gov. Vladislav Shapsha said. The Russian Defense Ministry on Sunday confirmed that Moscow’s troops had taken a village about nine miles north of Avdiivka, days after the war institute reported on its likely capture early on Thursday. That day’s assessment described Moscow’s gains as “relatively quick but still relatively marginal,” adding that Russian troops had advanced by no more than three miles over the previous week.

That additional help may be needed as Ukrainian officials say Russia is assembling forces for a major summer offensive, even if its troops are making only incremental gains at the moment. Drawn-out Ukrainian efforts to mobilize more troops, and the belated building of battlefield fortifications are other factors currently undermining Ukraine’s war effort, military analysts say. Kyiv’s Western partners have repeatedly vowed to stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” But vital U.S. military help was held up for six months by political differences in Washington, and Europe’s military hardware production has not been able to keep up with demand. Ukraine’s own manufacturing of heavy weapons is only now starting to gain traction.

Russian state agency RIA reported that the strike on Mykolaiv targeted a shipyard where naval drones are assembled, as well as a hotel housing “English-speaking mercenaries” who have fought for Kyiv. Also on Sunday, Ukraine’s army chief reported that the battlefield situation was worsening for Kyiv, with Ukrainian forces tactically retreating along three sections of the front line in the eastern Donetsk region. In a post on the Telegram messaging app, Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi said that Russian troops continue to attack “along the entire front line” of more than 620 miles, with pitched battles raging west of the city of Avdiivka. Ukraine’s troops were compelled to make a tactical retreat from three villages in the eastern region, where the Kremlin’s forces have been making incremental gains against their weaker opponent, Ukraine’s army chief said Sunday.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed Monday its forces had also taken the village of Semenivka. Blowback would be inevitable, however, if attempts to replicate favorites unique to specific ballparks failed — if San Francisco garlic fries or L.A. Furthermore, most regional ballpark offerings are inferior versions of what is available outside the ballpark, like crab cakes in Baltimore, cheesesteak in Philadelphia, barbecue in Kansas City or deep dish in Chicago. Russian shelling on Saturday and overnight wounded at least seven civilians across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.

A 36-year-old woman was pulled alive from the rubble after Russian shells on Sunday morning destroyed her home in the northeastern Kharkiv region, the local administration reported. Her 52-year-old neighbor was also rushed to a hospital with a stomach wound, the administration said. Ukraine has launched a barrage of drones across Russia overnight in attacks that appeared to target the country’s energy infrastructure. Also on Sunday morning, the Russian Defense Ministry said that 17 Ukrainian drones were downed overnight over four regions in the country’s southwest.

Soon enough, you'll have a stylish space that better reflects your aesthetic and lifestyle. If people do opt for a bigger kitchen, we are going to see a lot of that space utilized for entertaining. “More and more I find clients wanting to do away with a formal dining room in favor of a place to entertain in the kitchen,” says David M. “We love that it allows light to filter through upper cabinets entry, and is a fantastic way to display everyday items without gathering dust on open shelving,” she says. While this was a big trend of 2021, people are becoming even more tuned in to the difference lighting makes in a home, says O'Gara. He predicts we'll see more smaller table lamps on countertops and warmer-colored LED bulbs making their way into the kitchen. "Bringing in more of this ambient lighting is always a win, and I'm excited to see retailers bringing more lighting options [to this space]," he says. 2020 software provides end-to-end solutions for designers, manufacturers and retailers that can help you bring ideas to life, inspire innovation and streamline processes.

Another big trend in the 2010s involved lots of white tiles—including subway and hexagonal—sometimes patterned in herringbone or staggered layouts. However, according to Smithe the next biggest trend in kitchen flooring is going to be terra-cotta. But unlike what we endured in the early 2000s, this latest reincarnation isn’t going to be the least bit Tuscan.

MLB teams with IHOP to whip up ballpark foods for delivery, pickup Los Angeles Times

Though the 600-mile front line has shifted little since early in the war, the Kremlin’s forces have in recent weeks edged forward, especially in the Donetsk region, by sheer weight of numbers and massive firepower used to bludgeon defensive positions. “The lack of ammunition has allowed the Russians to push forward along the front line. Lack of air defense has made it possible for more Russian missiles to hit their targets, and the lack of deep strike capabilities has made it possible for the Russians to concentrate more forces,” Stoltenberg said. One of the Ukrainian drones damaged communications infrastructure in Russia’s southern Belgorod province, which borders Ukraine, Gov. Vyachaslav Gladkov said later on Sunday. The announcement marked an end to the long, painful battle with Republicans in Congress over urgently needed assistance for Ukraine.

What are the food offerings at Angel Stadium? Here’s a look

NATO countries haven’t delivered what they promised to Ukraine in time, the alliance’s chief said Monday, allowing Russia to press its battlefield advantage while Kyiv’s depleted forces wait for Western military supplies to arrive. In its latest operational assessment, the Institute for the Study of War said that Moscow’s forces have opportunities to push forward around Avdiivka, the eastern city they took in late February after a grueling, monthslong fight, and threaten nearby Chasiv Yar. Its capture would give Russia control of a hilltop from which it can attack other key cities forming the backbone of Ukraine’s eastern defenses.

Menus

Cruises Without a Passport: Here's Everywhere You Can Cruise Without a Passport in 2024

cruise do you need a passport

We break down closed-loop cruises, what happens in an emergency if you cruise without a passport, and what passport rules are for Alaska, the Bahamas and other popular cruise destinations. There are two ways to cruise to the volcanoes, tropical forests, whales, and surfing beaches of Hawai‘i without a passport. One is on a cruise where you fly in and spend your entire vacation in and around the islands. The other is a long slog, closed-loop sailing from a California port or Seattle, with a stop in Ensenada, Mexico, and several days at sea getting to and from Hawai‘i. You won’t run into any passport requirements on tried-and-true routes from U.S. ports such as those that visit Puerto Rico and the U.S. Closed-loop cruises from New York City, Boston, Baltimore, and Port Canaveral from lines such as MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean head to the famous pink-sand beaches and golf courses of Bermuda.

International Travel

Note that the birth certificate can’t be the cute one with the baby’s footprints issued by the hospital; it needs to be issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the child was born. Closed-loop Hawaii cruises that don't require passports come in two varieties. The short option is to fly to Honolulu and take a seven- or 10-night cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. This is the only large cruise ship allowed to operate entirely within the Hawaiian Islands without visiting a foreign port. If you find yourself without a passport but in need of one, you would need to contact and locate the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate and request an emergency limited validity passport in order to fly home.

Closed-Loop Cruises: The One Passport-Required Exception

Below, we've compiled a list of seven places to visit without a passport, from scenic Alaska to the beachy Caribbean. Don’t have the right documentation to cruise, according to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative and the U.S. Some U.S. citizens may also be able to use an “EDL” or an Enhanced Driver’s License, which can be used in place of a passport when re-entering the United States after traveling from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean.

If you are unsure about the meaning, ports of call are temporary stops in various ports. They allow you to exit the ship and experience different cultures, climates, and on-shore excursions. As you would expect, if these ports of call are in international destinations, you would need a passport, even if you initially boarded your cruise ship in your home country. Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific coasts are both accessible to cruisers who do not hold passports.

Cruise Line to Debut Magic Shows on Five Ships

Many cruises overnight here to give passengers time to get out and explore. There's excellent shopping, dining and water sports activities in many ports like Nassau and Freeport. Another popular option is buying a day pass to mega resorts like Baha Mar and Atlantis, both of which welcome cruise visitors for the day. If you thought you needed a passport to head overseas on every single trip, think again. Those long waits for passport applications or renewals, even if you finally secured an in-person appointment, aren't needed for some cruise vacations.

The Best Cruise Lines

Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services. If you are unsure if your cruise is domestic, consult the cruise line, as they can quickly tell you what type of cruise it is and your specific I.D. Mexico cruises most frequently depart from Los Angeles (San Pedro and Long Beach), San Francisco and San Diego.

TownePlace Suites Port Canaveral Room Tour & GoPort Package

Your cruise company also may require you to have a passport, even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the foreign country’s border agency does not. Cruises are a popular way to travel and there are many options to choose from. Whether it's a tropical beach vacation, a river trip in Europe or a glacier cruise in Alaska, there's something enjoyable about kicking back on a ship, exploring a handful of ports and taking it easy for a few days. However, when looking at small ships and larger ships on more expansive routes, keep in mind some islands—including Martinique, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Bart’s—do require a passport. This point should be top-of-mind especially because of COVID-19 and any other medical emergency that would require the trip to be altered or a medical evacuation.

If cruising from California, with most sailings 14 nights or longer, your choices expand to such lines as Holland America, Celebrity, Viking Cruises, and Seabourn. The only big ship line with the fly-in option is Norwegian Cruise Line’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which is U.S.-flagged, a requirement for operating to and from a U.S. port without stopping in another country. (Foreign-flagged lines are not allowed to sail between U.S. ports without visiting another country under the Jones Act.) You can do a week on the ship from Honolulu and visit five Hawaiian Islands. Virgin Voyages’ ships are limited to age 18 and up and bring you to Virgin’s classy Beach Club at Bimini. For a fancy small ship, check out sailings on the 298-passenger Evrima, the first yacht from the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, sailing to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale.

International Cruises

Or just enjoy a meal of fresh salmon or crab while you're ashore -- no passport needed. You've decided you want a vacation, but there's a problem -- you're a U.S. citizen and you don't have a passport. Maybe you've never had the time, money or desire to travel abroad previously, or perhaps your old passport has expired. It can take eight to 11 weeks (expedited wait times are five to seven weeks) for a routine passport to be issued, so you always want to plan ahead.

Then there are scenarios where severe weather or some other unforeseen situation could require the cruise ship you are traveling on to make an unexpected stop at a foreign port. In these cases, you may be required to stay on the ship if you do not have a valid passport to show port authorities. Again, you could board the ship with an enhanced driver’s license or a valid government-issued photo identification and a birth certificate. This ensures that the name on the ticket matches the person boarding the ship. Princess, Holland America and Celebrity all strongly recommend passport books, but they allow one of the WHTI forms of identification. Again, the passport card opens up one-way possibilities, assuming you aren't flying and your cruise only includes Canada and the U.S.

In these cases, government-issued identification and proof of U.S. citizenship are acceptable alternatives to a passport book. Beware of 20-plus-night cruises that are round-trip sailings from the West Coast and would seem to fit the bill for closed-loop cruises that don't require passports. Most of these cruises don't work because they also include stops in French Polynesia, which is outside of the WHTI agreement. Passports are required for the islands in the South Pacific, which means they're required for the entire cruise. Be aware that requirements on closed-loop cruises can still change in certain countries, so be sure to check the entry requirements of the specific cruise ports on your itinerary. Some Caribbean nations still require passports or passport cards, like Martinique and Guadeloupe.

This is welcome news for those whose passports may have expired, for families who want to opt out of buying short-term passports for children, or haven't had a chance to renew their passport. Three-day cruises aboard Carnival Conquest depart Miami for the Bahamas, but return back to Miami. This means U.S. passengers don't need a passport for this closed-loop sailing. The Bahamas is a Caribbean nation of islands and a popular cruise destination.

Once you have your passport in hand, there are a few important tips to keep in mind as you travel. First, always keep your passport in a safe and secure location, such as a hotel safe or a hidden money belt. It's also a good idea to make a copy of your passport and keep it with you in case your passport is lost or stolen. Scrambling for a temporary passport can create mounds of paperwork and plenty of headaches, and the time it takes to process is never guaranteed.

However, for many travelers, it can be confusing to know what travel documents are required to embark on a cruise. One of the most common questions is whether a passport is required for a cruise. In this blog post, we'll explore this question in detail and provide the information you need to know to ensure you're prepared for your next cruise adventure. You might be surprised to know that certain U.S.-based cruises allow you to cruise without a passport. But just because some cruise passport requirements allow for “no passport cruises” doesn't mean you should sail without one.

You Should Have a Passport on Your Cruise Sailing Even If It's a Closed Loop

cruise do you need a passport

The same thing could happen if you accidentally don’t make it back to your ship in time for departure, following a day out at one of the itinerary’s destinations. While normally, you could meet back up with the ship on the next island over, if you had a passport, again, if you don’t, you can’t. When most travelers think of cruises in sunny, sandy locales, they think of the Caribbean or South Pacific.

Travel Tip

If you want to visit Mexico's eastern shores, you can find three- to 15-night cruises to Costa Maya, Cozumel and Progreso. Sailings depart Florida from Miami, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral; you can also find itineraries from New Orleans, Galveston and Mobile, Alabama. The cruises that you don't need a passport for are closed-loop sailings, which depart from and return to the same port within the U.S. One-way sailings from one U.S. port to another or from a U.S. port to a foreign one would require a passport. For anyone who'd prefer a passport-not-required destination that can be explored during a short amount of time in port, cruising to Bermuda is a natural fit. It's a fairly small island, and since several itineraries offer overnights (some that span more than one night), you'll have time to learn your way around, have dinner in town and check out the nightlife.

Cruise Destinations That Don’t Require a Passport

Her work appears in publications ranging from Global Traveler to Golf Magazine, Mashed to Forbes, and Bloomberg. When she’s not writing, you can find her exploring the mountains near her home in the Adirondacks. You can choose to either fly out to Hawaii and take an inter-island cruise, or you can take a cruise all the way from California to Hawaii and back.

What happens in case of an emergency if I don't have a passport?

Instead of a passport, passengers will need to carry a valid U.S. driver’s license and proof of citizenship (a birth certificate or certificate of U.S. naturalization should suffice). Mainstream cruise lines operate numerous cruises along the U.S. and Canadian coasts that don't require passports. These depart from the ports of Bayonne, Baltimore, Boston, Manhattan, Brooklyn and occasionally Norfolk. The majority of these New England and Canada cruises are weeklong fall sailings; however, a handful depart at other times of the year or are a touch longer, ranging from eight to 10 nights. While cruising with a passport is always recommended, it's not required by law in certain circumstances. Closed-loop cruises from U.S. ports that visit Bermuda, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico are part of an international agreement that allows U.S. citizens to cruise without a passport.

Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your entry, so it's important to plan ahead and renew your passport if necessary. Even if your cruise doesn't require a passport, there are several benefits to having one. First and foremost, a passport serves as a universally accepted form of identification.

You may need to start the passport renewal process and get a new passport a few months before the expiration date. While you might be okay not bringing a passport if your cruise departs and returns to your home country, it can be a good idea in case of an emergency. This is particularly true if your cruise hugs the shorelines of other countries.

As long as your cruise departs and returns to a U.S. port, you won’t need to bring a passport. You will be rejected if you forget your passport and it is required to board the ship. Unfortunately, you would also be ineligible for a refund, as bringing your passport is your responsibility. You should also ensure that the name you used when booking your cruise is the same as the one on your passport. If you have recently changed your name, there are certain steps you will need to take. Fortunately, Royal Caribbean International offers a simple guide explaining what you must do to address this issue.

What Documentation Do You Need for a Cruise if You Don’t Have a Passport?

Department of State passport agency or at one of the thousands of passport acceptance facilities located throughout the country. In the event of an emergency or unexpected delay, having a passport can help you get home more quickly and easily. While the answer is no in many cases, it's a good idea to bring it along, just in case.

Cobranded Cards

If you’ve given it some thought and plan to use your passport for an upcoming cruise, don’t just assume your trip will be all smooth sailing from here. If you had a passport, you could just leave the cruise during its next stop and hop on a flight from the nearest airport. However, you always need a passport to fly internationally, so if you don’t have one, you’d be out of luck. Likewise, another potential option that’s valid on some cruises and in some destinations (though not all) is a Trusted Travel card. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information.

But if you wish to book a rail journey excursion on the White Pass & Yukon Route, which takes you from Alaska into Canada, choose the shorter White Pass Summit tour; you'll need a passport for the longer trips. You may be surprised to learn that U.S. citizens don't need a passport to sail on "closed-loop" cruises with lines like Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and others. Whether you need a passport depends on numerous factors, including where you embark and disembark the ship, where you're sailing to and which line you're cruising with.

You no longer have to deal with bureaucracy and long waits for first-time applications or renewals. No, photocopies are not considered valid forms of identification for any cruise, domestic or international. If you are worried about losing your passport or other important documents, it is advised that you secure them in your cabin safe box as soon as you make it there. Aside from remembering to bring a passport or passport card for yourself and any children in your care, you also need to make sure that those pieces of identification have a valid expiration date. Basically, having a passport on you while you travel by cruise ship can be a worthwhile precaution, even if it is not needed. Any international movement, whether planned or unexpected, will always be smoother if you have a passport on you.

If you end up stranded in another country because of unforeseen circumstances, you do still have options, but it will take more time and effort to get home with only a birth certificate and photo ID. Whether or not you need a passport to get on a cruise ship depends on several factors, such as your nationality, the cruise itinerary, and the ports you will be visiting. As a general rule of thumb, if your journey starts and ends at the same U.S. port, you will likely be fine without a passport. This is called a closed-loop cruise, and it allows you to visit several international destinations without ever needing to present your passport.

Florida’s ports of Miami, Port Everglades (in Fort Lauderdale), and Port Canaveral (about an hour east of Orlando) offer the majority of closed-loop cruises to the Bahamas. You can cruise to The Bahamas from a number of U.S. ports along the Atlantic Coast. Located just southeast of Miami in the Atlantic Ocean, The Bahamas offers an ideal island getaway.

Note that enhanced driver’s licenses are issued in very few states at this time, so it’s important not to assume that yours qualifies as identification and proof of citizenship. As a general rule, Americans embarking on a cruise should have a passport, with at least six months validity left. However, certain itineraries departing from U.S. ports don’t require that passengers even have a passport. Some cruise lines also offer one-way cruises in both directions between Canada and New England. These itineraries, like Alaska cruises, might be possible without a passport book. This is the case as long as your plans don't include flying into or out of Canada and your cruise line allows you to cruise with either a passport card or other acceptable form of identification and proof of citizenship.
